My first gaming experience was World of Illusion Starring Mickey and Donald on the Sega Megadrive. It was a great co-op game experience. One of my teammates on the other hand, had his first gaming experience on a 386 computer playing educational games.
What got you into programming games?
I was introduced to Macromedia Flash in Secondary School – that probably sparked an interest in making interactive things. My lack of programming knowledge meant that I often couldn’t make what I wanted. I later enrolled in a local polytechnic and subsequently Digipen to learn how to program games.
What development tools or coding did you use?
For making Spacejacked we use Haxeflixel, which is a very easy to use framework for making 2D games. We code in the Haxe language.
Spacejacked is mainly made by a very small group of fresh university graduates with little industry experience, myself included. Our lack of experience with shipping games led to a rather ambitious goal of making a puzzle-platforming Metroidvania game. 6 months later we scrapped the entire game because it wasn’t fun – we salvaged whatever little we could to make a game with a smaller scope and a tighter focus on action. It was a nerve-wrecking experience, especially since we knew we didn’t have the financial capability to last for too long.
After completion of the game what game will you make?
We will continue to update Spacejacked with free content while possibly trying to make a cooperative-style arcade game on the side.
Spacejacked will be our first commercial title. We do somewhat have a few small titles that we developed during game jams: http://www.rottenmage.com
I also have a personal project that I’m still working on, but it’s already playable: http://www.gamejolt.com/games/death-cabin/90316
I have a favourite console – it’s the Gamecube =)
I’m not sure if a Gameboy Advance game counts as retro, if it counts, Metroid Fusion is my favourite. Otherwise I would go with Super Mario World, or Doom.
My favourite game on the Wii U is Smash Bros =). I play that quite a bit with my teammates.
MIB on the Gameboy.
What game would you like to see on Retrogamesmaster in the future?
A feature on Doom or Metroid would be lovely!
We have a demo link here:
The Spacejacked Demo is also available on Steam! We also post weekly updates on Spacejacked development on Twitter @rottenmage
