Review

Gameplay and Challenge

The game remains faithful to its origins, delivering a tough, rewarding experience reminiscent of early ’90s NES action titles. Players progress through six intense stages, battling against cyborgs and augmented soldiers, with each level ending in a challenging boss fight. Renowned for its difficulty, the game demands memorization of stage layouts and enemy patterns to succeed. For those craving an even greater test, a Hard Mode offers an extra level of challenge.

Visuals and Sound

The visuals have received a major upgrade, boasting vibrant pixel art that honors the classic style while incorporating modern enhancements. Each environment is richly detailed, with a diverse array of stages and beautifully animated enemies. The soundtrack is energetic and immersive, perfectly syncing with the game’s fast-paced action and contributing to its atmospheric feel.

Gameplay Mechanics

Players have access to an array of ninja weapons, including shurikens, shotguns, and a kusarigama chain, enabling attacks in multiple directions. The game also features acrobatic maneuvers like wall running and hanging from rafters. One notable challenge is that the game doesn’t pause when selecting weapons from the inventory, making quick decision-making essential during combat.

Modes and Replayability

Alongside the core Arcade Mode, the game includes a Time Attack Mode and the option to earn Prep Money, which can be used to purchase new ninja gear. Although relatively short, the game’s replayability is high, thanks to its tough difficulty and additional modes. However, the steep difficulty spikes may be off-putting to some players.

Co-op Play

The game offers local co-op play, allowing players to team up with a friend for added fun and strategic gameplay. While enjoyable, this feature is limited to local play, with no online co-op support, which may disappoint some players.

Overall Impressions

“Shadow of the Ninja – Reborn” successfully modernizes a classic while staying true to its roots. Its updated visuals and punishing gameplay deliver a nostalgic yet refreshed experience. While the challenging difficulty may not suit everyone, and the absence of online co-op could be a drawback, fans of retro games or tough action platformers will likely find this game a worthy addition to Your collection.
