Creators of Polybius Invaders Peter Ward and Jonni Hirst

Interview by General GOO

What is your first gaming experience?

PW: I played on my friend’s 48k Spectrum and my first game was Jack the Nipper by Gremlin.

JH: It was Taito’s Space Invaders at an amusement arcade in Blackpool.

What got you into creating games?

PW: I was asked by Jonni to design graphics for Polybius.  Also took an interest in BASICon my ZX Spectrum many years ago.

JH: I bought a ZX81 to do my homework on. Didn’t do homework on it, you couldn’t really, but you could code games in BASIC.

What development tools or coding did you use?

PW: That is a question for Jonni

JH: I use quite a lot of development tools. Depends on what Job I need to do. For artwork and graphics I use Photoshop, AutoDesks Sketchbook (free and brilliant), Aesprite, Gimp. For Animations I use either Spriter or Spine, just depending on what I’m animating. Both brilliant pieces of software but both have limitations. For Game development I’ve been using Gamemaker Studio 2.3 using GML.

What hurdles did you have making your current game?

PW: Originally the game was going to be out early 2019 we even marketed at Play Expo at the Winter Gardens then Covid happened.

JH: A divorce, Hernia Operations, A Global Pandemic. Most people stayed at home and were safe. I was unfortunately, in my full time job, a healthcare professional, or so I was told at the beginning of the pandemic, and had huge 36 hour shifts. I had zero motivation to do anything after working such a long shift.

After the completion of the game what game will you make?

PW: Our next project will be a retro platformer.

What other games have you made?

PW: I have not made another game. I’m a virgin lol.

JH: 1979 Invasion Earth

My favourite computer was my Amiga and the Megadrive console. Do you have a favourite?

PW: Amiga and Spectrum and Megadrive which I still own.

JH: I load the old computers I grew up with like the ZX81, Spectrum, C64 and Amiga, but at the moment I much prefer my MSI Apache laptop. It’s very good.

What is your favourite retro game?

PW: Too many but Cannon Fodder, Sensible Soccer, Sonic 2.

JH: This is a hard question, Turrican, Smash TV, galaga and Pacman.

Do you still play games on the current consoles? If so, what’s your favourite game?

PW: I have a Series S and PS4 and Switch. I’m a huge Fallout 3 Fan and play a lot of Tetris 99 and PGA 2K21 Golf.

JH: I’m PC all the way. Broforce and Pacman Championship Edition 2.

What’s the worst game you have ever played?

PW: Rise of the robots and Pebble Beach Golf on the Sega Saturn.

JH: Street Fighter 2 on the ZX Spectrum. They should have never made it on the Spectrum. It just wasn’t up to it.

Finally what game or feature would you like to see on Retrogamesmaster in the future?

Feature on our future games.

PW: One interesting fact is that my 9 Year old son David Ward designed General Goo.

JH: Polybius Invaders, Polybius Runner… (not heard of Polybius Runner – you will).. To be continued.
